Musing: The NaNoWriMo Countdown

crest_square-1902dc8c2829c4d58f4cd667a59f9259My ducks are all in a row for NaNoWriMo, and I’m feeling a volatile mix of excitement and anxiety.   I have a solid outline and a writing schedule, but I can’t help but feel I’m forgetting something.   It’s like getting ready for a school field trip and the kids are all sugared up and ready to rock.

I remain optimistic.  For me I feel the 55,000 word goal is achievable.   It is a matter of making something of quality.   NaNoWriMo is a marathon and as such it’s a game of pacing.

My weekly short stories should come in handy here.   I need to establish a matter of consistency.   MACRO CORP. needs to be throttled back so it ends coherently around 55,000 words.   This isn’t my full length fantasy novel; this is an exercise in restraint.

This is exactly the reason I picked my superhero concept.   I wanted to bring back Macro Man and the gang for a long time.   I did (and plan on finishing them after NaNoWriMo) guest chapters for Cross up’s I Hraet You.   A lot of that fueled my motivation for my November project.

I’ve made some changes to the story and characters, but all for the better.   I promise.

The main character of the Novel is Raymond Teller, an up and coming ‘first million’ businessman.   Joyce, Matt and Jay will be in the novel too but as a supporting cast.  This is an origin story but by no means slow paced.   Macro Man sports super strength and the ability to change size as his primary super powers.

The only other hint I’ll offer is that the story takes place in New Orleans.   I am not shy of my love of Cajun food, but I picked it for the culture and history there.  Buckle up, it’s gonna be a fun ride.

As such, I’ll make an open offer for any artists out there willing to provide art for my NaNoWriMo ‘cover’.   At the very least I’ll give you a full copy of the finished manuscript and credit you for the doodle.

In addition to my Wed / Friday posts.   I’ll be doing a monday check in blog post too with a word count update.

  1. Oh ho, so the truth is revealed — the IHY guest chapters were a springboard for your up-and-coming project, eh? Most intriguing. I’d like to think that (should alternate dimensions exist) wherever Lloyd is right now, he’s eager to sing praises about you. For one reason or another. I dunno, singing praises seems like something he’d do just to celebrate crossing the street.

Whatever the case, good luck with your project. Superheroes or not, I can’t help but wish you the best; given what I’ve seen from you in the past, I’d like to think you’ve got this NaNo in the bag. Can you beat the buzzer? I’d say yes, based on the (likely accurate) assumption that you’re too manly to lose.

    • Never the intent, only the result. IHY inspired me to do something with Ray and company. After getting a chance to write them a bit, it ended up being the natural choice. I also considered Two Hunters, the continuation of Fennrick’s story and Game of Life. But this just feels right.
